End of the day, packing up to leave the office, I discovered that Vista lost one of my monitors in my dual monitor configuration.

I asked the office mates if anyone has seen that. Sure enough, they had it happen to them last week.

A quick reboot solved the problem, but I never had that problem with XP.

I upgraded to Microsoft Vista this week on my office computer. It wasn't as bad as some in the tech media would have you believe.

All the applications I use seemed to work fine, here the list of things I use in my daily office computing:

1. MS Office Apps
2. MediaCoder
3. Putty
4. Pidgin
5. FireFox
6. VideoLan
7. Quicktime
8. Trillian

Also, the bonus is that my old desktop gets promoted to my primary Linux desktop running Ubuntu.

My only question, where is the "WOW" in the Microsoft commercials? I was unimpressed with UI improvements and I turned off the annoying asking me security thingy as I am admin on it.

People are pretty blown away at how many were minted this year. $700+ million worth and the cost to produce dollar bills $500 million.

Went to get some more dollar coins from a Washington Mutal bank in Seatle today. They had several $25 rolls of the Thomas Jefferson coins, so I bought $25 worth.

One of the things I have been wondering about is how many of these coins are in actual circulation being used as currency vs. just being collected.

Here are the 2007 numbers:

Washington $340,360,000
Adams $224,560,000
Jefferson $203,610,000

Spinning hunks of metal and magnets are so 20th century, so are $1 bills.

Spinning hunks of metal and magnets are so 20th century - JeffB

This was a quote from one of my co-workers last week, while talking about using solid state drives(SSD) in our project.

It got me thinking about other things that are 20th century.

Dollar Bills - Dollar bills are a real anachronism. They represent a wasteful use of resources. If the US stopped making $1 bills, it would save $500 million a year according to the US GOA.

I am doing a 6 month experiment to use the $1 coin.

Today, I went to Washington Mutual in the market in Stanwood, Wa to see if I could find any. To my surprise, they had $25 worth on site, I took $10 and spent $1 at Starbuck's.

Nobody got upset getting me them, Starbuck's took it without a blink of an eye. The only person who gave me grief was my wife. She hates them.

I'll keep blogging on my adventure with the $1 coin.

CNN/YouTube Democratic Debates

Watched a bit of the CNN/YouTube Debates last night.

The questions were good, funny and to the point. The answers were predictable.

It was representative of many generations and demographics.

My big takeaway was how small the response was.

Despite all the CNN and YouTube hype, only 2984 people uploaded a video question for consideration from the millions of YouTube members. Pretty weak response rate. I would have expected 10's of thousands of questions.

Is this what democracy in America has come to?

Here is hoping the Republican CNN/YouTube response will be better.

Or some enterprising political groups mobilize to assist to get more questions submitted.

I was part of the millions that didn't bother to upload a question, so I'm guilty as well.

Stay tuned for my many uploads.

Indie Club Night

Went to the IndieClub workshop and film night on Saturday.

There were three short presentations:

City Permits and Regulations, by the Seattle Film Office

Musical Composition and Film Scoring, by Hummie Mann

Casting and Working With Agencies, by Tanya Tiffany

The permits and insurance information was very timely for my upcoming project "The Lake"

Hummie Mann is one the NorthWests film composing masters with way to many film credits to mention. His presentation was very helpful and I want to have one of his classes score some music for the TV show.

Tanya Tiffany and her crew of actors did a bit of a set up to demonstate the difference professional SAG actors and non-union. I talked to her a bit about my project and requirements. Will try to meet up with her this week.

Also did a little networking with Raffaele Riconosciuto the director of the evenings film.

Make Believe

http://www.makebelievethemovie.com/

There were a lot of things in this film I liked. Some I didn't.

Kaelon Christopher Horst put in a great performance. This guy is going places with his career.

Composing was done by some of Hummie's students(Barb Blevins, Dean Jensen, Brian Olendorf). I liked the scores, but there was way too much of it in the film. Could have been that the volume was too loud in the editing, but I found the music too distracting, hence my perception that there was too much of it.

Overall, as a film, it was a little too artsy for my taste, but there was some great cinemtography and the theme of a young man's struggle to come out his make believe world back to reality was effective.

Raffaele Riconosciuto and Scott Tuton did good job as a short feature and the film should be considered their debut work into the film festivals. Expect more good things from these guys.
